The Night of Screams

The Night of Screams

Our tale begins with the Night of Screams, the vast assault on the Ward Walls of Ul-Solaria which began the final War Against the Lightless. During the attack, the party is detached from the Wall to track down an incursion by a strange form of Changed One (a Cyst). They track it through the Shattered Levels and into The Deeps. After fighting various creatures en route (deeplings, mutated spiders) they finally track the Cyst to an abandoned Dhakanni shrine where they interrupt a foul Calling Ceremony which is apparently designed to destroy Oldstone. They kill all of the Changed Ones there, but note that several members of the Darralis Family were participating and escaped. They return to the Wall and make their report to their commander.

The Siege of Aston

Party is sent on a suicide mission (probably by the Darralis Family) to scout the town of Aston which hasn’t been heard of since The Night of Screams. Since they are rushed, they have to go cross country which means they are not protected from the Mists. Luckily, their connections to the Deep Scouts Maggis and Scales give them a map to secret Warded sanctuaries and they survive to reach the town. Aston, unfortunately, is in ruins and the dwindling band of survivors are desperately battling hordes of Arisen each night while the town commander Sire Laird hides in the Inner Sanctum Tower and refuses to offer them shelter or help them fight. The party convinces Lieutenant Thyvvers to allow them entrance to the tower where they arrest Sire Laird, and take over the defense. After a desperate battle against the seemingly endless hordes of Arisen, they get the survivors safely in to the Tower and hold out until the Ward Watch sends a relief column. When it arrives, they are ordered back to Ul-Solaria to stand trial for their actions during The Night of Screams.

The Trial

The party returns to Ul-Solaria where they stand accused of high treason, usurping legitimate authority, blasphemy, and consorting with Dark Powers. After a contentious trial, they are released but not without cost. Tobias’ entire family is murdered, and Lilian’s brother kidnapped (probably killed as well). The party continues their investigations and is ambushed by a new breed of Changed One that can walk around in broad daylight. They manage to capture several of these new monsters and track their creation to a series of Darralis soup kitchens. They disrupt this scheme by switching tainted ale barrels around, creating (and releasing) these Changed Ones before Eloine Darralis can arrive to control them. This leads directly to the riots and events of Conflagration Night.

Riots in the Dark

Once the riots begin, the Companions must convince the High Council to allow the Ward Watch into the city to help restore order (which they succeed in doing). Eloine takes the opportunity caused by the rioting to attempt to eliminate the prisoners the Companions have captured, thereby removing all proof that Changed Ones that can move about in broad daylight exist but the party manages to stop her. In the process they kill Sir Laird who has been changed into a Changed One abomination. Then they hear reports that the Ward Watch’s Central Tower hasn’t communicated with anyone since the rioting began, so they are tasked to see what’s going on. What they found was a massacre. Changed Ones (most likely the daylight-resistant variety) had apparently taken the entire citadel by stealth the previous night and killed the entire garrison and staff; they were using the lowest levels to enact a massive Calling Ceremony to undermine the city Ward Walls. The party counterattacked, killing several abominations (including a hideously altered Montaug—the now half spider/half man creature the Mists resurrected to guard the front door of the tower) and managed to halt the ceremony before it succeeded. They also managed to capture Eloine and take her to the High Council for questioning and trial (ironically for the very things they had initially been charged with).

Knives of Mist

The party, worried that their mysterious foe has gone to ground, begin to investigate various leads around the city hoping to identify whomever (or whatever) was behind the assault. They are contacted by strange allies during this search (a secretive race of shapeshifters who are apparently the remnants of a Servant Race of the First Ones) and also assaulted by several elite assassin bands obviously hired by their mysterious foe. After much investigation, they determine that these events all started decades ago when Domon Darralis visited what is obviously a Unity ruin. The party leaves to investigate and is attacked by Mist-touched wolves enroute and subject to a near fatal trap in their Warded sanctuary that first night. They survive to reach the ruin and, upon investigation, determine that is a combination prison, library and museum for the First Ones (and that the Darralis-funded archeology expedition is now a reduced to some red smears on the floor). Unfortunately they also manage to awaken the Librarian which leads to a stiff fight before It’s defeat. The fate of the first expedition is now clear. Having some new leads, the group heads back to Ul-Solaria to re-group.
